INA, a subsidiary of the Schaeffler Group, is a leading global manufacturer of rolling bearings, plain bearings, and linear motion products. With a legacy spanning almost 80 years, INA has earned a reputation for precision engineering and innovative solutions in the field of motion technology.

While not specified whether INA or FAG bearings are used, the Schaeffler Group boasts the following:

  • Schaeffler supplied over 3,400 rolling bearings for the lock and water management systems of the new Panama Canal channel, which commenced operations on June 26, 2016.
  • Bearings for The Great Belt Bridge (Storebælt), one of the longest suspension bridges in the world (1,624 meters).
  • 109 spherical plain bearing and 72 bushes from Schaeffler connect individual bridge sections and bridge cables to the foundation at the world’s fourth-longest suspension bridge, Osmangazi Bridge, in an earthquake-prone region in Turkey.
  • The 321-meter glass dome spanning the central east-west nave of Berlin Central Station was built using countless spherical plain bearings and bolt systems made by Schaeffler.

History of INA Bearings

INA was founded in 1946 by Dr. Wilhelm Schaeffler and his brother, Dr.-Ing. E.h. Georg Schaeffler, in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Georg Schaeffler was a brilliant mind, and invented the cage-guided needle roller bearing, introducing the patent and having a first prototype built in 1950 to then expand this idea to the world in the years after.

Then, in the 1950s and 1960s they expanded their operations abroad to the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Now, the parent company known as the Schaeffler Group can be found all over the world.

In 1964, the company started operations in a joint venture with Fafnir Bearing Co. - in Cheraw, South Carolina.

Later on, INA took full control of the joint venture, and in 1969, INA Bearing Company is incorporated in Cheraw, South Carolina.

The impressive growth experienced in the American market force the company to open its North American Corporate Headquarters in Fort Mill, South Carolina in 1985.

There are many other interesting facts about INA’s history. For example, a yacht that participated in the 1989 Whitbread Round the World Race, the Swedish maxi “THE CARD” used INA bearings, including the two types NCS 3220 bearings used in the pulley for the upper spinnaker halyard.

Clearly, INA bearings have a rich history, and have been involved in many events around the world. In 2021, they celebrated their 75th birthday, and their innovative nature has not disappeared.

About the author

Jure Pleško is co-owner of Tuli, a family business that helps innovative mechanical engineers by supplying them with machine elements to assemble machines and devices. As part of a family tradition, he grew up with machine elements from an early age and also completed his studies in mechanical engineering, earning a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. As a 2-year-old child he was also the inspiration for the company name, because at that time he was shouting a lot and hence the name Tuli, which in translation means screaming. Jure is an innovative mechanical engineer himself, which he proved during his student years with the construction of an electric vehicle, which was also awarded by the Slovenian Fund for Human Resources Development and Scholarships.
